ATHLETICS

After-School Sports Program

Beginning in grade four, students may elect to participate in the After-School Sports Program. Student-athletes in fourth through sixth grade compete in the San Fernando Valley Private School League. All those who choose to play will be placed on a team. The coaches will determine the team best suited for the individual athlete’s skill level. Each grade will have two levels, Varsity and Junior Varsity. Lower School athletes may be eligible to compete on Elite Level teams at the discretion of the Athletic Department.

For seventh and eighth grades, Sierra Canyon competes in the highly competitive Delphic League. Depending on the number of seventh and eighth graders who wish to participate in the After-School Sports program, tryouts may be necessary to compete at this level. The Athletic Department strives to maximize the options available for each student-athlete; however, rosters are limited to the numbers of positions available on each team.

All students wishing to play on an after-school sports team must maintain a minimum grade of C in each subject area and have no U’s at anytime during the school year (2.2 GPA for Middle School students). Students on probation, whether academic or behavioral, will not be eligible to participate on a sports team.

Students purchase their own uniforms and are responsible for having them at school on game days. If a uniform is lost, misplaced, or forgotten on the day of a game, a new uniform must be purchased. Only school-issued game uniforms may be worn, including jersey, shorts, and socks.

For fourth and fifth graders, after-school team practices are held twice a week. For sixth graders, practice is held three times a week. For seventh and eighth graders, practice is held four times a week. Student-athletes are expected to attend all practices and competitions. Athletes must inform their coach in advance if they are unable to attend a practice or game. Athletes will be allowed one absence per week from practice sessions. Coaches and/or the Athletic Coordinator will have discretion to reduce playing time for athletes with multiple unexcused absences.

Games are played after-school and are scheduled by the coaches. When final team rosters have been established, coaches will provide each student-athlete with a schedule, team roster, and directions to other participating schools.

Team and individual awards will be presented at an end-of-the-year Sports Awards Ceremony. Individual awards include the Coaches Award, Team-3 (Pride, Unity, Hustle), and Athlete of the Year. League and City Championship teams will also be awarded their trophies at the Sports Awards Ceremony.

After-School Intramural Sports Program

Sierra Canyon School is excited to offer the Trailblazers After-School Intramural Sports Program for first through third graders. The goals of the program are to instruct and develop skills that will provide each student-athlete a more thorough understanding of each sport, encourage healthy competition, prepare aspiring athletes with skills needed for competition at higher levels, and provide an enjoyable atmosphere for growing and learning. All intramural sports programs are offered on Friday at the Sierra Canyon Lower School campus from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

These future athletes are taught individual and group skills involving hand-eye coordination, throwing, catching, kicking, and running. Additionally, emphasis is placed on developing speed, strength, agility, balance, and quickness. Sport-specific drills and scrimmages will be utilized. This program will prepare our student-athletes to compete in our after-school sports program that begins in fourth grade.

Fall sports offered through the Intramural Sports Program are Football and Basketball. In the winter we offer Basketball and Soccer, and in the spring, Basketball, Soccer and Volleyball are offered. Sierra Canyon also conducts sports clinics throughout the year. All sports offered through the Intramural Sports Program are co-ed.

Physical Education

The Physical Education program at Sierra Canyon is designed to provide students with instruction that creates a lifestyle which promotes health and vitality.
